Learning morphology: something old, something new - Speaker: John Goldsmith

Learning morphology: something old, something new

John Goldsmith
University of Chicago, Department of Linguistics

In the first half of my presentation, I will review some older work on automatic learning of word-structure, including both word-internal analysis and the use of syntactic distribution to help learn of less regular morphological patterns. In the second half, I will talk about more recent work in progress in two areas: word segmentation, which is a continuation of the earlier work just mentioned, and a new way to think about inflectional paradigms from a computational point of view, using a vector representation for morphemes.
