The 3rd SFB networking workshop (Cologne – Potsdam – Saarbrücken) on the Relation of Prominence, Surprisal and Information Structure will take place in Saarbrücken. This series of network meetings brings together researchers from the CRCs in Cologne, Potsdam and Saarbrücken. The aim is to discuss shared themes and methodological approaches of the CRC 1252 „Prominence in Language“, CRC 1287 „Limits of Variability in Language“, and CRC 1102 „Information Density and Linguistic Encoding“.

It combines insights from linguistics, the humanities, cognitive and computer science to understand the process of translating between languages and the particular features characterizing language in translation. Central concepts of contemporary translatology are translationese, linguistic patterns that tend to make translations more similar to each other than to texts originally written in their target language; and variation, which refers to the fact that different types of translations, such as written translations vs. interpreting, display systematic linguistic differences. “Reevaluating pragmatic reasoning in language games” by Les Sikos, Noortje J. Venhuizen, Heiner Drenhaus, Matthew W. Crocker

On March 25, (14.00-18.30) Roland Bennewitz, the Ombudsperson of the INM Leibniz Institute for New Materials will hold a seminar on „Good Scientific Practice and Communication“.

Abstract:
In this seminar we will discuss the foundations of good scientific practice. We will attempt to link the respective guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft with our personal experiences. What are the rules for scientific work and what is scientific misconduct? A key to good scientific practice is good communication. We will discuss general strategies for successful discussions and identify partners such as the Ombudsperson. The seminar will be held online and include discussions. Participants are therefore expected to join from an environment which allows for active participation and to switch on microphones and cameras.

Roland Bennewitz works at the INM Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken and is professor for experimental physics at Saarland University. He has acted as Ombudsperson for good scientific practice for many years.
